Reading isn’t just a hobby. It’s part of my mental health. Getting lost in a good book is good for the soul. I love being entertained. And I love the perspective I gain when I read about someone else’s path. Bonus: It’s a great example to my children. I read to learn. And I read for fun.
My dear friend Michelle once shared how she recorded the books she had read during that year. I loved that idea! And what a fun thing for my children to see what I was reading and at what age. Since then I have kept a note on my phone and I’ve begun recording the books I’ve read.

*Read Before
This is probably the most books I’ve read in a year. I did have quite a few rereads. But after reading the Magnus Chase series (which my oldest has been bugging me to do) I kinda wanted to reread Percy Jackson. And after reading Four I had to reread Divergent. And sometimes I grab book from my favorite regency author, Georgette Heyer, because they are so light and fun.
Now I want to share my favorites! I really enjoyed reading the Poldark series! Just when you think nothing else could go wrong it would. My hubby and I loved watching the series together. I just made sure I was way ahead on the books so I wouldn’t have any spoilers. And props to me for not giving away spoilers to my hubby. He couldn’t believe I kept so many secrets. (It’s one of my talents)
Also I love the diaries from Mr. Darcy and Captain Wentworth. My two favorite Austen books! And I love when you get the guy’s perspective. I totally recommend them!
Slave Stealers was a really good read! I finished it in about a day. I love how they tell the story of Operation Underground Railroad and compare it with African American slaves. I love reading more about Harriet Jacobs. It was definitely heartbreaking to learn about the heartache and sorrows that come from slavery. The stories weave together and leave you with hope that good people exist. And together we can fight slavery.
I loved The War That Saved My Life and had my oldest read after me. We both loved the story and learning more about England during the war when children were sent to live in the country. Beautiful lessons on bravery and loving ourselves and others. The Secrets of a Charmed Life also talked about sending your children to the country. I love reading about everyday people who show courage during difficult times.
And probably my favorite book and the book that has had the most influence in my life is the Book of Mormon. I can’t remember how many times I’ve read it. But when I do I feel closer to my Savior Jesus Christ.
You can find book reviews here and here for two of the books above. And I was able to interview the author of Superfail last year. My kids are big fans and I’m glad I was finally able to read it myself. I loved the story!
I would love to hear what YOUR favorite read was this year! Share it in the comments below. And check out my favorite reads from the year before.
