January is the perfect time to work on closet organization. A hall closet makeover needed to happen. Confession: When we first moved into our home I might have just shoved things into our closet. There was so much to organize and unpack our closet wasn’t really a priority. I kept telling myself I would work on it later. I worked on our Harry Potter Closet pretty quickly. But when I put away towels in our tiny closet I would shove them in and quickly push the door closed. Eventually I knew I needed to clean it out. So I thought I might share some tips to make that process less painful.
Closet Organization Tips
- Take everything out! It really is easier this way. I went through and sorted what I had laid out. It’s great to donate what your family no longer uses. I also realized that my tiny closet upstairs was prime real estate. I asked myself, “Do I really need this in this closet?” I decided that our swimming towels, which are large and bulky, were better stored in downstairs bathroom cabinet. So much easier to grab towels as we head to the pool. We decided to keep bath towels and bedroom linens here.
- $1 plastic bins at Walmart. I love these bins. I have one for pens and pencils, adhesives, play-doh, batteries, flashcards, and so many other items. To make them even more organized I love using my label maker to label them.
- I love keeping an extra jar to hold random game pieces we find. I am never disciplined to pull out a game to put back one Flipping’ Frog. And my kids usually have a hard time putting away everything. Maybe it’s just my house. Every once and awhile I will pull down a bunch of games and we will empty the jar. Or usually when we are playing a game like Harry Potter Clue we will look for House Point chips before we start playing. Our family’s favorite games are listed here.
- I love using Storage Helping Shelves. Great for pillowcases, baby towels, and cloth diapers. I tried to arrange my linens so like items were together. These stacking shelves help eliminate wasted space.
- Use large baskets to store overly large items. I had a basket but it ended up somewhere else. I need to pick up a new one to store my extra vacuum attachments in there at the bottom.
- Keep some frequently used items close where you can grab them easily. Our Clorox wipes are high enough to keep Georgiana safe but also easily accessible for the older boys to wipe down their bathroom. I also have one of our emergency flashlights within grasp in case of an emergency. If this door was standard size I would be tempted to add a shoe organizer to the inside of our door for even more storage
I’m happy to say that after 6 months our closet still looks great. Other areas of our house right now, not so much. Thanks for checking out our closet! I hope it gives you some new organizing ideas. Or at least some motivation to clean your closets out too!
