It’s that time of the year again. Something about fall makes me want to bake. Even though I live in Arizona and it’s still pretty warm. Baking with my kids is always a fun time. Usually it takes longer. And the mess is messier. But I do love being in the kitchen with my kids. And it makes for great one on one time. While taking browsing at our library sometimes I find a book with a recipe. (Or one that inspires a recipe) These are the perfect recipes to do with kids. Sometimes when I am making special treats for a birthday party I want to work on them myself. But when we are baking for the pure fun of baking and our goal isn’t perfect goodies then these are the recipes to try. The point of making these treats is to teach my children how to cook or bake, make quality memories, and eat something yummy together. And what boy or girl doesn’t want to try a dinosaur cookie recipe?
We borrowed the book How Do Dinosaurs Eat Cookies by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague. We already love their dinosaur series. This book happens to be a scratch and sniff book. AND there is two recipes in the back. Yoda went ahead and picked Cinnama-Saurus Rex Cookies. We had put Georgiana down for a nap and the older two were in school. We had a great time in the kitchen together. I let him pour in and mix the ingredients. I wasn’t sure how I would like them because I am not a huge fan of cinnamon, but they are really good. They are a perfect fall/winter cookie. And our house smelled amazing!
The recipe told us to roll them into little balls, but we wanted Dinosaur shaped ones instead. So we busted out our cookie cutters. I think next time I might just roll out the dough, bake them, and then cut out the cookies. Either way they are yummy. We ended up using the cookie cutter again to get a better dinosaur shaped cookie. And then we were free to eat the edges. I’m sure those calories don’t count.
Yoda had so much fun baking in the kitchen with me. I hope all my sons continue to cook and bake throughout their lives. I just cherish these sweet moments. I feel like Yoda was able to open up and talk and talk and talk. (He gets that from me) Sometimes it’s easier for kids to chat when our hands our busy working together. But I am sure his favorite part was eating those adorable cookies. This would make a great holiday cookie!
