This DIY Porg Costume made him the happiest boy on the block! Porgs are pretty much my kids favorite part of The Last Jedi. In fact I may have had three kids wanting to be porgs this year. Luckily they know I dislike sewing 3 of the same costume. Our 2018 Family Theme this year is The Last Jedi. And we are so excited to show you are family costumes. We had four really great themes but the kids finally chose this one.
And it may be because this kid loves porgs! I do admit the Star Wars creatures were all pretty cool. And I’m grateful none of my kids requested to be crystal foxes. This costume was a lot easier.
I knew I wanted his arms to be able to flap or be out so he could hold his candy pail. I already told them I’m hoping to get paid in Midnight Milk Ways. Just look at his sweet face below! He was in heaven! The costume is pretty simple to make. I was able to make most of it while he was at school. I probably spent more time trying to get the face just right. Hopefully being able to copy what I did you will save some time.
DIY Porg Costume
Supplies Needed:
- Grey fleece
- White fleece
- White felt
- Black felt
- Orange fur
I always like to use my kid’s clothes to determine how big to make my costume. I laid out pants and a shirt so I can make his costume full length. This also helps when they aren’t home and I’m sewing. Maybe normal people use measuring tapes, but my brain is better with pictures. I cut my front piece first, using the while fleece. You want to make a tombstone shape. Using that piece as a template cut your back piece with grey fleece. Cut it to match EXCEPT for the overall piece you see below. Later you will fold the back down (like below on the right side) and sew them together.
Sorry this first picture is terrible quality. But I want to help you get the general idea.
Now sew the fleece together up the sides to where your sleeves would start. Make sure your right sides are together.
Next cut two smaller tombstone pieces in both the grey and white. With right sides together sew your grey and white together to create two flippers or wings. Now you want to attach these to your Porg body. But only attach the grey wing to the back grey piece. That way your kid (or adult) can use their arms and hands naturally to hold their pail or dinner. See two pictures down with my son’s arms out.
Next you want to bring down those “overall” pieces I mentioned earlier. Fold them down and stitch the wrong side of your white material to the right side of your grey material. You can trim any extra grey that hangs on the inside. We are just creating the Porg’s shoulder.
Next using a hoodie cut two pieces of grey fleece. (You can see a picture with my Jedi robe tutorial). Sew right sides together to create a hood. Then attach this to your back grey piece. Match up the ends and pin in place. The back of your hood may have fabric folded on itself to make the end match up. That’s okay.
I couldn’t find any orange fur material. I was so bummed. I guess I could have just used orange fleece but it wasn’t the same. I was searching Joanne’s look for yarn or something to use instead when I found this Fake Fur. It was perfect! I picked some up along with some Rit dye. Sometimes I can’t believe I forget about Rit dye. It’s so easy and has saved me so many times. They have synthetic dye which was perfect for this fur. I followed the directions and it came out perfectly!!! I opted to blow it dry and it puffed right up again.
I cut “c” shapes and hand stitched on the fur. I then added a white felt piece on top by hand. And then my eyes and nose. I wasn’t creating a mouth so it took some time to make my hood look like a porg. My son was so thrilled to try it on.
I love sewing with fleece because I often times don’t worry about hemming or fuss about my seams. This costume took be two afternoons, including dying my fur. You may remember when I used Rit dye for my Endor Leia Costume. I will be sharing my other kid’s Last Jedi costumes this week. Be prepared for some more cuteness!
