Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! Seriously, don’t. And don’t even think about letting him stay up late. Our family LOVES Mo Willems! His books are so much fun to read. My son Yoda loves the Pigeon Series and Elephant and Piggie books. Actually all my kids love them. They crack up every time. And it’s so fun to do voices for these lovable characters. They do a lovely job teaching about emotions and real life. When we read Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus my son loves telling him no. My favorite is when the Pigeon replies, “You’re mom would let me.” and my kids say, “She would never!!!” (Rule follower. It’s the way I am) My dad got him two pigeon books last year for his birthday and he loves them. It wasn’t hard to suggest we have a Pigeon Party. After doing research (reading the books) we decided it would be a Hot Dog party. He was so excited! And then he asked for marshmallows. Done and done. I was so happy with how things turned out!
I love planning themed parties. But I like to keep things simple too. I made photo copies of my favorite Pigeon pages from the book. These images on dowels were super easy and a great way to decorate the table.
How to Make Paper Cut Outs for Party Decorations
I simply copied pages from my book Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus. Cut them out. I used skish-ka-bob sticks for my dowels to save money. And I have found Glue Dots Continuous Line the best adhesive for this project. They also work great for making photo props.
Our extensive reading and studying also told us that The Pigeon Wants a Cookie. Apparently He also wants a Puppy. But my kids are still patiently waiting.
As always it’s easy to decorate a party when you have a Cameo Silhouette. I love making a simple banner I can use again and again. I save them and pack them up in ziplock bags. For a tip in making paper bunting check out my Tip of the Day post. We also picked up party supplies from the Dollar Tree. Pigeons love to save money.
Decorating this cake was a breeze! I used the same technique when doing Draco’s Calvin & Hobbes Party last spring. And thank goodness I did. (Keep scrolling to see my mini heart attack) We made the cake chocolate, Yoda’s favorite. He was so happy with how his cake looked. It’s easy to be a cool mom with this cake decorating style.
We kept things colorful and simple with different kind of crepe papers. I loved making the fringe kind. It’s nice to switch it up sometimes.
A lady from my church donated this box which made for a great bus to play around in. Yoda loved helping me paint it. When the party started I had coloring pages printed off for the kids to color. One of his preschool friends asked if she could color inside the bus and I was like, knock yourself out!
We had the party at lunch and kept it simple. We served Nathan’s Hot Dogs, the only kind I will eat. Along with chocolate dipped marshmallows. We kept the cookies for when the kids left to cut down on the sweets. I like to watch how much sugar my kids get and Draco has type 1 diabetes so it makes things easier. And of course we had chocolate cake. I opted for water because I love healthy choices and not having to worry if some 5 year old spills.
Making Ketchup and Mustard labels kept the table looking pretty without labels. We NEVER have mustard in our house so I made sure to pick some up. One time when Yoda was younger he saw mustard and asked what that yellow ketchup was? Love that boy!
Our activities were simple. Duck, Duck, Pigeon was perfect for 5 year old’s. Reading the book just to make sure everyone knew how funny that pigeon is. I love this picture Grady got even though I realized after the party I never went up and put on some make up or did my hair. I was able to find tons of activities meant for teachers or homeschooling moms that were perfect for the party. I found this fun play-doh activity on the adorable blog Coffee Cups and Crayons. The kids loved designing their own pigeons.
I can’t believe my baby boy is 5! He is loving and thriving in preschool. He loves making friends and is doing so great at reading. He has such a big heart and is such a good brother to Georgiana. He loves to snuggle in bed with us late at night. Or surprise us by jumping from behind things. Our family loves him so much!!! I am so happy he had a great party with so many great friends.
Thanks for checking out our party! Yoda had a blast at his party. Fun games, fun food, and he even got presents. It was kind of fun that list year all of our kids had book themed birthday parties. It is something I mentioned in our Raising Readers Post. Feel free to check out our Percy Jackson Party, Calvin & Hobbes, and Ladybug Girl Parties too.
Oh, and before I forget the Pigeon wants to make sure you pin this to Pinterest. Doesn’t he ask so nicely….
And if you want to see what gave me a scare, take a look at this cake below. I think we need to ban Frozen Fever from our home. Olaf may not be the best influence. It may have been the first time I used Georgiana’s full name.
Luckily because of how I decorated my cake I was able to carefully lift my frosting image and turn my cake around. I suppose in her defense I never told her she couldn’t eat the cake. Yoda made sure she got that piece.
What is your child’s favorite book? I’m sure it would make a great party!
