I love that my little girl loves to read with me. Reading is a great way to have some quality one on one time. And after having three sons we already had tons of children’s books. Not that we own every book my heart desires but a good amount to make story time fun. As my daughter got older I began asking my friends for suggestion on great girl books. That that my daughter wouldn’t enjoy Dr. Seuss or our Animal Books or books about trucks because she does. But I wanted her to have books where a girl was the main character and someone she could relate to. And I didn’t just want books that were pink or about princesses, but I wanted strong female characters. Characters that she would grow to love and encourage her love of reading. As is turns out my sons like a lot of these books too. And I am all for that. So below are some of my favorite picture books to read to my daughter and sons.
I love Fancy Nancy! She is passionate about fashion and dancing. She loves to accessories and make life more fancy. Fancy Nancy is really wonderful about expanding my children’s vocabulary by using fancy words. Nancy is kind and a good friend. I love her feminine nature and love to make life more lovely. She loves all things French so it’s a bonus when my husband reads these books and talks in a ridiculous French accent.
Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy by Jacky Davis and David Soman
Georgiana’s favorite part about this book is Lulu’s dog Bingo. These books are awesome! My favorite saying in this series is “Ladybug Girl can do anything.” Lulu solves problems and helps other when she is being Ladybug Girl. She loves to dress up and be with her family. Yoda especially likes these books. He has a shirt like Bumblebee Boy and loves to wear it all the time. I know you will love these books.
This is the first book I ever bought Georgiana. Really anything by Kevin Henkes is delightful. My friend Paige shared this book with me when I was a leader for the 16 year olds at church camp. I love the message. Chrysanthemum loves her name, until she goes to school. It’s a great story about loving yourself and realizing it’s okay to be different.
Uni the Unicorn by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
This darling book is all about believing. Besides the most adorable illustrations this book has twist on believing. You see Uni believes that little girls are real. Even though everyone knows it’s not true. I love how this book encourages us to believe and think outside of the box. Uni dreams of a smart, strong, magical little girl who wants to be her friend. I love the traits Uni focuses on when she imagines her little girl.
Izzy the Ice Cream Fairy by Tim Bugman
My girlfriend Melissa gave Georgiana three books from this author. Each book has three friends that work together to solve a problem. I love the moral at the end of each book. And the illustrations are clever and colorful. There is always fun details on each page that my kids love. I personally love the flow of the sentences. I am a sucker for things that rhythm and sound lovely. There is a cute Georgie the Gingerbread Fairy book that might be perfect for Christmas.
Can you believe that I don’t think I have ever read a Madeline book until I had my daughter. These wonderful books have been around for over 70 years. Madeline is a little spit fire who is not afraid of anything. I love all the grand adventures she goes on. I love reading these books at the library with my children. And I love being able to show my children places outside of the United States.
Jane Erye: A Babylit Counting Book by Jennifer Adams
I know I have written about these Babylit books before, but I couldn’t leave them off this list. I love that I can introduce my children to classics and teach them basics like counting, colors, and opposites. Alison Oliver does an amazing job with her illustrations. My little girl is learning all about Bronte and Jane Austen which I am hoping she will read someday. If you haven’t checked out these adorable books, do yourself a favor and click the link above.
Rosie Revere Engineer by Andrea Bealty
I haven’t actually read this book but it is on my list. But I have been wanting to for ages. It’s about a bright young girl who works on inventing at night. There is a great message on the importance of perseverance. And I love the message that girls can build and create things. Our girls need to see girls can be inventors and scientists too.
DC Super Heroes: My First Book of Girl Power
I haven’t read this book yet, but I think I need to get it for my daughter. She loves Batgirl. Every time she sees a Batman symbol she thinks it’s for Batgirl. And she loves when I wear my Wonder Woman Bathing Suit. Click over on the link above to see images from the book. I love the style of it.
Pretty soon she will be older and we will ready for chapter books together. (I may have already bought her Anne of Green Gables.) But I am really enjoying this stage of reading right now. Please leave a comment with your favorite children’s book below. I love finding new books. And if you want you can check out some of my other posts about reading.
