Dressing as your favorite literary character is a wonderful way to encourage reading. When books can become part of our everyday life our world can become magical. Today I have rounded up some of my favorite literary costumes for girls. Our girls need strong female characters to relate to. And our sons need to learn about strong and brave girls too. Our job as parents or teachers is to help get them excited about reading. So check out these awesome Literary Costumes and let us know which one is your favorite!!!
Let’s start with this adorable DIY Madeline Costume! Years ago I saw a party with little girls in rows of two and swore I would have a Madeline party someday. What little girl wouldn’t want to dress up as an adventurous, charming girl. Read how you can make this sweet costume perfect for everyday dress up. And maybe check out some books and learn a little more about France while you are at it.
I can’t decide what character I would rather be from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Okay, I would pick Veruca Salt. When my kids are being especially demanding I love to burst out in song to “I want it now!” Charlie and the Chocolate would be a great family Halloween theme for someday. My older kids love this book! It’s a classic. And a great way to get them excited about chapter books. And I am seriously impressed with the Violet costume. This mom nailed this blueberry girl perfectly. Also great ways to teach our children to listen and be gracious.
You may remember from Yoda’s party that we are big Mo Willems fans. I love this Pigeon Costume from The House That Lars Built. Pigeons aren’t just for boys. And check out her Hot Dog bag. Seriously such a great costume! Your child will have fun asking you to stay up late with this cute costume.
We can’t leave out Hermione Granger! I love how JK Rowling created this smart, strong female character. What a breath of fresh air. Hermione is one of our favorites in this house. She is brave and loyal and Harry would be lost without her. You can learn how to make this easy Hogwarts robe or order one instead. This is a dress up essential in our house. Or you can be Luna Lovegood. I love her free spirit. And I love how she doesn’t really care what others think about her. Both of those traits are desirable. Really any character from Harry Potter would be fun.
I love this Olivia Costume this clever teacher from I want to be a Super Teacher. I am so thankful for fun teachers who go above and beyond to get our kids excited about learning. I just love the Olivia Books. And if you hurry they have a great Olivia collection at Gymboree. I got Georgiana a red dress and the stripped tights for her Christmas dress. I seriously die every times she wears it!
And even though my daughter is way too young to read the Hunger Games I wanted to share this great costume from Simple As That’s blog. Her daughter was Katniss for Halloween and her costume was just perfect. Even though she can’t read these books for a long time I think it’s fun for her to learn about brave and strong young ladies.
And I love this Paper Bag Princess!!! Such a fun and easy costume idea! A great story to share with the girls and boys in your life. We still need to add this book to our collection!
And my daughter loves wearing her Camp Half Blood shirt like her big brothers. She doesn’t really know how awesome Annabeth is just yet. But she does know that her costumes comes with a fun hat. I love that she is learning about Percy Jackson before she can even read. I’m sure she will want to read all the books when she gets older. And that is just fine with me!
And what I love most about Lady Bug Girl is that she can do anything! I love that my daughter is learning that she can solve problems and have adventures. Georgiana LOVES Lady Bug Girl and insists that all the Lady Bug Girl books in the library belong to her. I think her dog Bingo just might be her favorite! Check out these books if you haven’t yet. My give year old son is a big fan of the Lady Bug Girl Books too!
And we can’t leave out Fancy Nancy! Her books are extraordinary!!! (That means above beyond unusual) We love reading her books and we are all about being Fancy in our house. I love how Jane O’ Connor encourages children to be fabulous and tries to increase their vocabulary (Or list words they normally use). And it’s another great way to introduce your children to all things French!
