It’s always a good time to break out the holiday books! We are still building our collection but I love checking out fun books at the library. I wanted to share some of our family favorites to read around Halloween. Not all of these books are actually Halloween books. Sometimes we read these books in the fall, but I love reading “spooky” books this time of year. Just a disclaimer, my kids would never read a Goosebumps Book (at this stage of their life) so our “spooky” books are pretty tame.
The Runaway Pumpkin by Kevin Lewis Illustrated by S. D. Schindler
We first bought this book when Gandalf was a baby. It was actually the time we bought some of our pirate books and when we learned about Talk Like a Pirate Day. It’s a family favorite!Darling pictures and oh so fun to read. I have a certain rhythm that I do when I read this so I prefer that Grady doesn’t read this when I am around because he doesn’t read it right. It makes my boys crack up every time. They also love finding their favorite details in the illustrations.
Frankenstein by Rick Walton and Illustrated by Nathan Hale
This darling parody is perfect if your family loves Madeline! I love clever books like this! The illustrations and flow of the story is just perfect. It’s a great way to get excited about Halloween. Be sure to click on the link and get a peak inside. You won’t be disappointed.
Ladybug Girl and the Dress-up Dilemma by Jacky Davis and illustrated by David Soman
In case you haven’t seen Georgiana’s 2nd Birthday Party you should know we are big fans of Ladybug Girl. My daughter LOVES her and is pretty confident all the board books about Ladybug Girl in the library belong to her. This cute fall story is about Lulu and her big problem of what she should be for Halloween. As always it’s a great story with lots of great ideas to encourage little girls to be whomever they want to be!
Zombelina by Kristyn Crow and Illustrated by Molly Schaar Idle
This is a great book for my kids. It normalized the “monsters” and helps my kids not to be scared of Halloween creatures. Yoda found this book last year at the library and he loves to check it out. It’s about a girl who loves to dance. She enrolls in a ballet class and some of the girls aren’t to happy about it. I love how this book encourages us to love others even if they are different than us. And it has a wonderful message about family!
Leo: a Ghost Story by Mac Barrnett and illustrated by Christian Robinson
I just found this book at Barnes and Noble while the sweetheart and I were having date night. It’s about a ghost named Leo who is sometimes invisible. He just wants to be your friend, but people are scared of him. He meets a creative girl name Jane and their friendship grows. Again it’s another great story that encourages us to see people as they really are. I love stories with morals. Especially when there are some twists in the story. I think kids can become more empathetic as we have discussions after reading books like this. I promise you will love it.
Click, Clack, Boo! by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Betsey Lewin
I knew our family would loved this book because they can’t get enough of Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type. One of our favorites families gave us that book and let us know it was one of their favorites. My children already love the characters in this book. And again Farmer Brown is a bit grumpy. These stories are so hilarious! Just good, fun, silly! It’s a short but fun read.
Creepy Carrots! by Aaron Reynolds illustrated by Peter Brown
Another fun book Yoda found at our library. And not really a Halloween book, but perfect for this time of year. I read this book in a kinda creepy voice, but just enough to make my year old smile. He wasn’t really scared. And I always try to encourage books that have vegetables in them. Any thing to help them become familiar with them. Be sure to check out this cute story. You will love the illustrations and colors of this book.
Jampires by Sarah McIntyre and David O’Connell
If you subscribe to my blog you might recognize this book. These adorable Jampires have a really cute story. My kids are crazy for this book. Especially after we made Jelly Donuts after reading it. These cute creatures might just suck the jelly out of your jelly donut. I was able to find some glow in the dark vampire teeth at the Dollar Tree that they are still playing with. Our family LOVES this book!
Dia De Los Muertos by Roseanne Greenfield Thong Illustrated by Carles Ballerseros
I really loved this colorful, fun book. I haven’t shown it to my kids yet and I am not sure how Draco will do with it. But I always love learning about other holidays and cultures. And I just love the makeup and sugar skulls. I would love to check out this book.
Now this is the only book on my list that I haven’t read. I heard about it and it sounds wonderful. Apparently a bunch of “scary” things happen. But Georgia is much to clever to think it can be a ghost. She uses logic to solve the mystery. I have a feeling my oldest will really enjoy this book as he is all about scientific facts. I am hoping my library has it this week so I can check it out.
