One thing our family loves to do is visit our local firehouse. We’ve been blessed with a new one in our community and we are so thankful. I like to drop by treats from time to time for a couple of different reasons. First of all we love the brave men and women who are willing to risk their safety to save others. We all have jobs and roles we play in our community. My job as a mother, hair stylist, & blogger, doesn’t require me to put my life in jeopardy. But because there are people willing to fight fires my life has been blessed.
Recently we visited our home state of California after the recent fires. It was simply heartbreaking to see the destruction of the land. As I pointed out the black, burned land to my children, we talked about the dangers of fires and gratitude for our fire fighters. We had already been praying for those affected by the wild fires, but I think they better understood the problem as we drove through some of the destruction.
Another great reason for visiting a firehouse is to help my children realize there are everyday heroes who make up our community. When we can look outside of ourselves and learn to recognize and appreciate others we will naturally be happier. It’s easy as a child (and if we are being honest an adult) to be so wrapped up in our own lives that we can overlook others and the good they do. As we appreciate the sacrifice of others we naturally become more thankful.
I also love visiting our fire fighters so if we are ever in an emergency they will feel more comfortable with people that are there to help us. Emergencies are scary enough. But if my kids know fire fighters are kind and are there to help them it will put them at ease. And maybe even help them understand who they can call for help. As a mom if helps encourage conversations about safety and it reminds me mentally to review our family plan.
I had the chance to visit with my daughter and our friends. I reminded my daughter about our family plan that we went over 3 months ago as I told the fire fighter where we meet if we have an emergency. He gave a good suggestion that if you were trapped to throw out some toys from the window so they could know someone needs help. These little things, that we go over as a family, have more of a chance to be put to use as we continue to talk about them.
And as a mom I love their example of always doing chores, working hard, eating healthy, and working as a team. I love pointing out these traits to my cub scouts when we visit. One time a fireman told my cubs how important it is to keep their room clean, as it makes it easier to get inside if they don’t have to climb over messes. And I think when my scouts see cool adults have to do chores maybe, just maybe, they understand the importance.

This #thankfulthursday I want to share my appreciation for all the brave men and women who risk their lives to keep us safe. Our community is better because of them. And to help show our appreciation you can print off these free printables for when you visit your local firehouse. Sometimes our family likes to stop by on Christmas or other holidays when they have to be away from their families to let them know we love them. Fire Fighters sacrifice time away from their families, regardless of holidays, birthdays, or other events, so we can be protected. And if they aren’t busy they might even let you come inside and check out their engine!
You can also show your appreciation by moving to the side of the road so they can get by. It’s the little things that say we love you. But I think they also appreciated some homemade bread. Really you could stop by and pick up anything. Or even just make them cards. Sometimes we make extra rolls for Thanksgiving or give them some jam for Christmas. Whatever you decided to do I know they will appreciate the thought. If we are being real, I wrapped up the bread up before I put the cute paper on it. That way my daughter could give it to them and we didn’t need to worry about her 4 year old germ-y hands. I like to think it still looks pretty.
Now if you love this printable you are also going to want to check out my printable tags for Police Officers. They especially need love and support as usually everyone loves fire fighters. And you can also find free printable cards for veterans as well. I would love it if you could pin this post to help spread some love as we honor those who serve us.
And if you have a favorite treat to take to your firehouse please share it in the comments below! And check out more of my Thankful Thursday posts!
