Is your son obsessed with the Game Knight 999 books too? This boy was fixed on having a Gameknight 999 Party for his birthday. The Gameknight 999 series is an unofficial Minecraft book series. I wish I would recorded my son opening his boxed set for Christmas. Draco seriously gives the best reactions. Technically he had a Minecraft party for his 5th birthday, but how can I say no to a book party? I’m doing everything I can to get my kids excited about reading. And that’s why I’m thankful Mark Cheverton wrote this book series. What kid isn’t obsessed with Minecraft? It builds the perfect way to transition kids into reading.
The premise of the books is a boy (whose screen name is GameKnight 999) who accidentally transports himself into the Minecraft world. Apparently he isn’t very kind in the beginning of the series, but is able to learn about friendship, kindness, and courage through his adventures. And I recently discovered that Herobrine is a bad guy. Having the word ‘hero’ in there really threw me off. (Tell me I’m not the only mom who isn’t up with her Minecraft?) My boys LOVE these books. And during our New Year’s interviews I asked my kids where they would go if they could go anywhere. Draco replied New York, so he could meet the author of the Gameknight Series, Mark Cheverton. Just for fun I tagged Mr. Cheverton on Twitter when I posted my son’s party invite. I thought he would get a kick out of my son choosing his books as a birthday theme.
He retweeted my message saying it was a cool picture. When I told my 9 year old he started jumping up and down, not believing an author liked his party invitation. What I didn’t tell him is that Mr. Cheverton also reached out to me and offered so send some signed bookmarks and trading cards, along with a poster for my son. My husband and I were both so grateful! It was super generous. And we knew it would make my son’s day! He was so excited for his new poster!!! He loved seeing all the books in the series, I think it took him awhile to realized his poster was signed by Mark Cheverton.
This time of the year was crazy, so for decorations I made a simple banner with my Cameo Silhouette. I also made some creeper bunting. I was trying not to repeat the decor ideas from his party years ago. I was able to talk him into making his party a swim party, which made the party activity really easy to plan. I ended up having to travel to California a couple days before the party so I was really happy he went with the pool party idea. I used paper and my paper cutter to make large GameKnight and Herobrine people. I love how a little bit of paper can dress up a party.
I also sent my hubby to get some balloons so we could have some Ghastly and Creeper Balloons. (Just add crepe paper and use a sharpie) My kids loved playing with these! But my son’s favorite part (besides the signed poster and bookmarks) was when I showed him the cake. Using the tracing method I like to use, I was able to create a custom GameKnight 999 Cake. I’ve also made a Calvin and Hobbes and Mo Willems’s Pigeon cakes. Click over to learn how to use this method to make cakes. Again, I love parties based off of books.
The boys were so excited to get bookmarks signed my the author!!! Some of them were already big Gameknight 999 fans. And others had been learning about them from Draco. I’m pretty sure Draco and his friends are going to be reading the series together this summer. My oldest, who is our fastest reader, had pretty much finished the series.
My son insisted we needed a health potion for his party. And since it was his party I opted to make the health potion Strawberry Crystal Light. The perfect drink for Minecraft loving diabetic boys! I also made these darling dirt blocks that I originally found here. My kids thought they were the coolest. And they didn’t take much time at all. The only change I made was adding cocoa powder instead of chocolate cereal.
Draco had an amazing party! We are so blessed to have so many great friends for our kids. My son loved all the GameKnight Party Ideas and his heart exploded getting something from his favorite author. If you haven’t check out the GameKnight Series yet grab some as they will be perfect for summer reading. You can click below for tips on encouraging your children to love to read.
