Who doesn’t want a Hermione costume in their home? She is known for being the cleverest witch of her age! But that is just one of the many reasons I love Hermione. I love strong female characters for both my sons and daughter. I am so thankful for J. K. Rowling for Hermione Jean Granger. She is brilliant, kind, and a true friend. This costume was actually made years ago when my second son, Draco, was 1 years old. I think it looks pretty great for being played with for 7 years. Have I mentioned how happy it makes me to have my kids LOVE Harry Potter? I think this robe is an essential for any little girls dress up wardrobe. Georgiana still doesn’t quite get the whole wand thing. She still uses it as a sword or light saber. Once she got put on timeout for hitting her brother, to which I sternly said, “Hermione would never hit someone. Okay, maybe Draco, but he deserved it.” I hope the little girls in your life love this robe and long to wear it like my little girl does. I love that she loves other characters beside Elsa and Ariel. Nothing against them, but Hermione is so much cooler.

Similar to our Jedi Robe Tutorial, you want to lay your black material, folded to cut two, out in your working area. Sometimes I have my child lay down on top of the material to figure out their measurements. Other times I use their clothes as guides, especially if it’s a gift or they are sleeping.
Cut your basic T shape as shown in illustration 1. (Excuse my drawing skills) After you cut out two pieces you will want to sew them together with right sides together. Unlike a Jedi Robe you can have a seam at the top where it will hang on your shoulders.
Next you are going to want to cut out two rectangles from your black and 2 from your burgundy material. If you need some help figuring out a good size of your rectangle try using a jacket hood as a guide. I suggest making it a big bigger. Sew two side together with your black material as shown in the illustration in figure two, making sure to keep right sides together. Repeat with your burgundy material. Next sew the two rectangles together where the arrow is pointed. This will create a burgundy liner in your hood. The bottom of your rectangle will be sew on to your robe soon. When you are sewing make sure to put your right sides together.
Take your robe and cut a line up the front of your robe. Measure the length. Then cut 2 long strips the lengthen of your robe. I had my strips of material two inches wide. Finish off one edge of your strip. Sew the raw edge to the raw edge of your robe, again matching the material right sides together. Press. This will create the look of your robe being lined. You could I suppose line the whole thing. But I love saving time and money. Hem the sleeves and bottom of your robe.
Attach your hood to your robe making sure to match the ends. After you have pinned your hood sew them together. Apply your Hogwarts Badge and frog closure.
Simple. Easy. And perfect for Halloween or every day dress up. And don’t forget to get a wand for your little witch or wizard!
Now if you love Harry Potter but really don’t like sewing there is another option. There is a costume available on Amazon. And if Hermione is your favorite don’t forget about curling her hair. I used an iron to get this look. But I can’t wait till her hair is a little big longer and we can try these curlers! Don’t they look awesome? I have heard such great things about them!
Now this tutorial could be used to make a robe for Harry Potter, Luna Lovegood, or Draco Malfoy. Or even someone from Hufflepuff too! Just change your liner color to match. Our family is actually in the process of planning a Harry Potter party and I wish I had the funds to make 15 or 20 of these robes. But it get a little pricier when you need material for growing 11 year olds. I suppose it wouldn’t be too embarrassing to have robes several inches short. I almost have as many children as the Weasley’s…
Having a large variety of dress up clothes is a great way to get your kids excited about reading. Be sure to check out more tips for Raising Readers. And if you are looking for even more empowering female characters you can check out Annabeth from Percy Jackson or Princess Leia. I am hoping to have another great dress up costume for you next week!
