I love reading new books. And I love sharing my passion for reading with my kids. Holidays are the perfect time to enjoy new books. And to help the books come alive I love to do activities that make a connection with a book. What better way to encourage kids to be readers. (For more tips on ways to encourage reading check out this post!) I follow a couple of different Instagram accounts that love to share their favorite books for kids. I found one of my new favorite blogs Everyday Reading a couple of months ago. She shared a photo of a fun book cover (Illustrations really help me fall in love with children’s stories) and I knew I wanted to check it out at our next library trip.
The book is called Jampires by Sarah McIntyre and David O’Connell. These adorable little creatures LOVE jam!!! And I mean they LOVE it! And maybe jelly donuts might just be their favorite. This book is clever and funny. All of my kids ages 2-10 loved it. And I thought it might be fun to make our own Jelly Donuts with our Homemade Jam we made last month. Luckily for me I found some glow in the dark vampire teeth at the Dollar Store. My kids have been playing Jampires ever since.
This time of year I love reading “spooky” books. Not really scary, because my kids couldn’t handle it, but fun silly Halloween spooky. Although really this book could be read anytime of the year. Don’t be fooled by this adorable face. He is totally planning on eating your jam.
I may have found this donut after my daughter got down from the table. She just may be a Jampire.
But I think I will keep them anyways. They are pretty adorable Jampires. I hope your family will enjoy this book as much as we did. My girlfriend Edie told me about an easy recipe where you can fry Grand’s Biscuits to make donuts. We made some adjustments to make jam filled donuts.

Homemade Jelly Donut Recipe Below
- Grand's Biscuits
- Jam
- Oil for frying
- 1 cup Powder Sugar
- 1 Tbsp. Milk
- Heat your oil over medium-low. Place uncooked biscuits in the oil to fry. Turn them when they start to brown. Place on paper towels. Fill a sandwich bag with jam and cut off a corner. Use a butter knife to make a hole on one side. Fill your donut with jam. Place donut on a cooling rack.
- Add your milk to your powdered sugar and mix. Slowly add more until desired consistency. You want your glaze to be thin enough to easily coat your donut.
- Pour your glaze over your donut. Serve and Enjoy!
- Because these donuts aren't missing their center they take longer to cook. By keeping your heat lowered you won't burn your donuts. Feel free to turn more than once till donuts are cooked.
