This Jedi Robe Tutorial is perfect for any little Jedi. I made these robes for my son’s 4th birthday and they were a great hit. My kids use them All. The. Time. They love playing Star Wars. And they also double for a shepherd costume for your nativity. They are super simple and I can’t wait to show you how to make them.
Jedi Robe Tutorial
Items needed:
Brown Jersey material
Thread
Sewing Machine
Scissors
pins
Start by folding your material with the fold on the top. True Jedi Robes don’t have seam at the shoulders.
Give yourself a large arm hole and start cutting horizontal towards the center. Sometimes I like to have my child lay down on the material and I use chalk to see where I want to cut. Remember Jedi robes are billowy so make it a large width for your sleeve. Then start cutting down towards the bottom corner. See arrow #1. This part is really technical . My lazy efficient way to match my side is to pick up the piece I just cut and lay it down mirrored on the other side. That way I make sure my angles are accurate. Next cut up the center to create your opening in the front. Once you get to the fold part of your material cut 2-4 inches on each side. See arrow #2.
Next you are going to create your hood. Cut out a rectangle with the fold on the top of your material. Use your child’s jacket to serve as your guide, but remember to make it bigger. Jedi robes look really cool when the hood is oversized. Sew up one side with a curve. You now have two sides that are not sewn together. One of these sides will be where your face goes. The other will be sewn to your robe.
Sew your side seams together. Jersey material is perfect for this because you don’t need to hem your sleeves or other areas because it’s a Jedi Robe. And I am pretty they left them free. You know, to be one with the force.
With your hood and robe inside out you are ready to sew them together. Pin the edge of the hood to the corner of the robe. Repeat on the other side. The most important part is that your ends match up. If your hood is kind of large you will just have more gathers when you sew it together. Space out and pin your hood to your robe. Sew them together.
And there you have it! A quick and easy Jedi Robe. Wasn’t Gandalf an adorable little Jedi?
Now if your child is bigger it can be more challenging because you have to use more material to create that seamless shoulder look. Either buy lots more material or you can have a seam and just not tell anyone. I made a robe for our good friend Colin when Gandalf had his 4th birthday. He volunteered his time to teach our young padwans the ways of a Jedi. I think I gave him Shoulder seams and my husband gave me a hard time.
So when I had to make him one this last year for his costume I made sure that didn’t happen. Turns out it was cheaper (and easier) to order it from Amazon than to make it. Adult Jedi robes are more material which means more money. When I made Colin’s robe I lived in California and was able to hit up an outlet and buy the material real cheap. Which was great because I made 17 robes that year for Gandalf and his friends. I have had to re-sew some of the seams but I am glad to know we are still using his robe 6 years later.
