Our Lord of the Rings Family Costume may be the One Family Theme to Rule them All. Our family was so excited to choose this epic family theme. (Even though only 1/3 of us have actually read the books) Some themes are just classic and worth repeating (Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc) and this might be one of those themes. Every year our family does a family themed Halloween Costume. And I can’t tell you how thrilled I am that my kids still want to dress up together. I think it really builds family unity. They get so excited about their costumes and acting things out together. Not to mention the blast they have when they choose the theme. (I have told them Pokemon will NOT be happening again. Once was enough for me) And one of my favorite parts is seeing my daughter get so excited to be the “blonde elf girl” even though she really didn’t have any idea who she was.
But she was so excited that there were two elf girls and that there was a blonde and brunette one. Naturally she wanted to be Galadriel. She loves wearing her crown and having elf ears. Yoda, with his pure heart, made the perfect Frodo. Not to mention he’s pretty small for his age. Draco, who is prone to the dark side, was SO excited to be Gollum. He crouches all around using his creepy voice. And my oldest, and wisest son, was thrilled to represent Gandalf.
I was excited to be Arwen, but I wanted to make her “chase costume”. I love how she protect Frodo and the courage she shows. And my husband was cracking me up with wanting to be Boromir with some arrows. He made the arrows and I think it turned out amazing. I’m afraid he would try to use the ring for good. I do think he identifies with that character. I was hoping he would want to be that handsome ranger…
I wish we had more than 20 minutes to get pictures before we lost our light, but at least we got some. I love these people so much! Despite the yelling at did while trying to get my kids to cooperate and take pictures. They were all great on their own, but they drag their feet for group ones. And I am so happy we can look back at these fun times while my children are so little. Some day, when they have all read Lord of the Rings, it will be lovely to look back at these treasures. And how cool would it be if at least one year we could do an extended family theme!!! I may have to start sewing in January to make all my grand kids their costumes, but that would be amazing. Remind me to ask for that one Christmas as a gift.
This picture above is one of my favorites!!! She was so excited to get this picture. We may need to frame this one. You can check out each of the tutorials to learn how to make your own costume. The kids costumes were pretty quick. I really enjoyed making them.
