With school back in the swing of things it’s been much harder finding time to watch our weekly musicals. My girlfriend was telling me about a live performance they were able to attend. Her kids loved Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. She had the DVD and was so sweet to let us borrow it. Can you believe I have never seen it? And I had no idea Donny Osmond played Joseph. Our family really loved it. I really want to add the song to our Musical Playlist where they list all 12 brothers. Usually I can only name 8 off the top of my hear. I don’t know about you but I remember things better with music.
For our food choice we decided to make something with corn. (I love the dance where the corn stalks bow to Joseph!) One of my besties gave me a recipe years ago that came from another great friend who had moved away. I love naming things after the person’s name. It makes my cook book so much more personal. I love how fluffy and cake-ey this corn bread is. It’s fairly high and has the perfect amount of sweetness. Almost like a cake. My kids loved it! It’s been a couple of years since I have made it.
I went ahead and warned my kids that this was a creative musical and it takes place in the 60’s so it’s kinda crazy. Every once and awhile I would add, that didn’t really happen in the scriptures. They would roll their eyes and tell me that they know. But I just wanted to make sure. Also because of the subject manner I will give you a heads up when they cover Genesis 39. My hubby and I exchanged glances when Potiphar’s wife came on. I would have chosen a different dress. Maybe one that didn’t look like she was wearing pasties. We went ahead and paused after this section to have a family discussion. We reviewed what happened in the scriptures and had a chance to talk about it. What did Potiphar’s wife want? Why did Joseph refuse? What was the consequence of his choice? I reminded our boys what we should do when we view pornography: we should be like Joseph and run away.
I went ahead and grabbed one of my favorite jackets that I got from my mom’s younger days. Grady calls it my Technicolor dream coat. I had Yoda try it on. He looked adorable in it. All in all our family loved this musical. It was a great way to talk about the scriptures and important traits that Joseph possessed. We talked about spiritual gifts and how The Lord always is there for us even when we can see him. We can trust in His plan.
