Totally admitting that I have not watched Newsies till tonight. I know some of the music. And I danced in Seize the Day in a church musical show when I was 16. But I knew my boys would love it. And they did. We started off the night with Pastrami Sandwiches. My husband told me the sing about them in Kings of New York. Turns out they don’t. But it was still a great dinner. And my first time trying pastrami. I was surprised I liked it.
We purchased some Rye bread and pastrami this morning. I did buy Boar’s Head, they have the best meats. And some of my kids opted for the pickle as well. My kids were kind of hesitate for this musical, even though we listen to some of the music already. I told them there was lots of guys in this one. That’s when I found out they like movies with boys and girls. Gandalf especially was hooked and didn’t want to stop watching this movie. Sound of Music is still his favorite so far, but he really liked it. Yoda wasn’t a huge fan but I think it’s because he is only 4 1/2. They were a little bummed we didn’t have dessert as well like when he watched The Sound of Music.
I loved talking to my children about this time in history. It was hard for my boys to grasp the boys didn’t have families or were so poor they were just trying to feed themselves. And seeing the kids smoke kind of threw them off. (Of course they didn’t know it was terrible back then) We were able to talk about what was right and fair. I explained the joke in the beginning that politicians being corrupt wasn’t new news anymore. We talked about child labor laws and the importance of getting a good education. I was also able to tell them that It’s not okay to go against the law to obtain favors or money from people. I love teaching my children about history and the importance of standing up for what is right. I really enjoy the movie and spending time together as a family. Especially when my handsome husband sings along. His voice is pretty dreamy.
I hope you are joining along with us and watching these great musicals. I love filling our homes with food, music, and laughter. (And sometimes a little education!)
