I have been wanting to create a Plan of Salvation printable for quite some time. Visual aids are key in learning. I made one years ago and it has been super helpful when teaching my children about God’s plan for His children. As a young girl taking the missionary discussions I was able to better understand this plan because one of the missionaries drew it out for me. I am pretty sure I still have those drawings tucked away some where. So you can imagine my excitement when President Uchtdorf and President Monson both talked about the importance of teaching and understand the Plan of Salvation, or Plan of Happiness. I took text from President Dieter F. Uchtdorf conference talk to help our families understand God’s Plan of Happiness.
This lesson is an important one to keep reviewing with our children. I want my children to know this plan and have it committed to memory. If they do learn this plan they will be able to help others. I love what President Uchtdorf shared, “When I explained these principals, in my own simple words, my heart would overflow for the gratitude for God who loves His children. And a Savior who redeemed all of us from death and hell.”

O How Great the Plan of Our God Lesson Plan
Opening song: I am a Child of God
Opening prayer: by invitation
Pre-Earth Life
(Place your pre-earth life circle on your board or wall. Then use your spirit person to show that we live with Heavenly Father)
Just like our opening song teaches we believe that we are literal spirit children of our Heavenly Father. Explain to your children that we existed before we came to earth. We lived with our Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother. We were all brothers and sisters before coming to earth. We are created in His image. We had a grand council in heaven and chose to follow our Father’s plan. Some chose not to follow. Those of us who did choose this plan would be sent to earth.
“We are Eternal beings without beginning and without end. We have always existed. We are the literal Spirit children of Divine, Immortal, and Omnipotent Heavenly Parents.”
“We walked with Him in our pre-mortal life. We heard Him speak, witnessed His majesty, learned His ways.”
“You and I participated in a Grand Council where our Beloved Father presented His plan for us where we would come to earth, receive a mortal body, learn to choose between good and evil.”
“But we also knew our Savior Jesus Christ had pledged to come to earth, live a sinless life, and voluntary lay down his life in an Eternal Sacrifice. We knew if we gave our heart to Him, trusted Him, and strived with all the energy of our soul to walk in the path of discipleship we could be washed clean and once again enter the presence of our Beloved Father in Heaven.”
Earth Life
(Place the Birth rectangle and Earth Life circle on the board. Put the spirit and physical body together and place on Earth Life. Add death later as you teach about death)
Our life has a purpose. We came to earth to receive a physical body like Heavenly Father. We were born into families to help us become like our Heavenly Father. Our physical bodies look like our spirits in our pre-earth life. As we were born we passed through the veil, causing us to forget our pre-earth life.
Our purpose on this earth is to learn to choose between good and evil. We knew we would have challenges and life would be hard. God knew that we would make mistakes. He provided a Savior for us. Jesus Christ lived a perfect life. He sacrificed His life so we could repent and be worthy to live with our Heavenly Father again. Because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ we can repent and be made clean.
On earth we can choose to follow our Savior and live our lives patterned after Him. We can be baptized and help others. Just as birth is part of our earth life so is death. When we die our physical bodies are buried in the earth and our spirits go to the spirit world.
“Our moral life, however, is only temporary and will end with the death of our physical body, but the essence of you and I will not be destroyed. Our spirits will continue living and await the Resurrection, a free gift to all by our loving Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ.”
Spirit World
(Add the Spirit World circle and leave the physical body at the earth while the spirit lives on in the Spirit World)
Our spirits continue to live in the Spirit World. When Jesus Christ comes to earth again we will be Resurrected. This is when our physical bodies and spirits come back together. (I like to show each of my hands and then clap when they come back together) Because Jesus Christ has overcome death we will never die again. We will then be judged according to our works and choices.
Degrees of Glory
“At the resurrection our bodies and spirit will be reunited, free from pain and physical imperfections. After the resurrection there will be a day of judgment. While all eventually be saved and inherit a kingdom of glory, those who trust in God and seek to follow His laws and ordinances will inherit lives in the eternities that are filled with unimaginable glory and overwhelmed in Majesty. “
“That day of judgment will be a day of mercy and love. A day when broken hearts are healed, where tears of grief are replaced by rears of gratitude. When all will be made right.”
“But I have confidence that we will not only be satisfied with the judgement of God but we will be astonished and overwhelmed buy His infinite grace, mercy, and generosity and love for us His children. “
President Uchtdorf shared the Belfast coat of arms, Pro Tanto Quid Retribuamus, which means “What shall we give in return for so much”.
Ask your family what you can do as individuals and as a family to give for all the blessings we have been given. Follow up with your children and invite them to act.
End with these words from our dear prophet President Thomas S. Monson, ” Essential to the plan is our Savior, Jesus Christ. Without His atoning sacrifice all would be lost. It is not enough, however, to merly believe in Him in measure. We need to work and learn, search and ponder, repent and improve. We need to know God’s laws and live them. We need to receive his saving ordinances. Only by so doing we claim eternal happiness.”
” From the depths of my soul and all humility I testify of the great gift which is our Father’s plan for us. It is the one perfect plan to peace and happiness both here and the world to come.”
Bare your testimony of God’s Plan of Happiness. Testify of Jesus Christ and the essential role He has in our Father’s Plan. Encourage your children to follow our Savior so we can strive to live with our Father in Heaven.
