When Gandalf was a baby we loved taking him to Barnes and Noble and checking out new books. Raising Readers has always been important to us. I loved how Barnes and Noble had books on display by holiday. Then I saw a sign that read “Talk Like A Pirate Day September 19th” and I couldn’t believe it. This couldn’t be a real holiday. I asked an employee and she looked just as confused at me. Well we embraced this holiday and have been celebrating Talk Like a Pirate Day ever since.
Besides dressing up in pirate fashions to get free donuts, having treasure hunts, and eating Pirate Booty we also love reading pirate books this time of year. I wanted to share some of our favorite Pirate Books…
How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long Illustrated by David Shannon
This was the first book we bought that night at Barnes and Noble. (Although I am pretty sure it’s cheaper on Amazon, link above) This is probably my favorite pirate book. Jeremy Jacob becomes a pirate in this adorable tale. The illustrations are really charming and the story is really fun to read, especially if you can do a pirate voice. One of my favorite parts is when Jeremy learns pirates don’t have to do anything (accept swabbing the deck). Pirate don’t have to brush their teeth or wear pajama’s. In the background you see one pirate putting on his jammies. Jeremy learns maybe he doesn’t want to be a pirate anyway. All my kids love this book and crack up when we read it.
Roger the Jolly Pirate by Brett Helquist
This darling tale is about Roger, a pirate who just doesn’t fit in. Apparently he is a terrible pirate. I always love when there is a character who is different and learns to be loved for being who they are. This heart warming tale will have you cheering for the pirates. Even when they go against the Admiral. Bonus they have sheet music at the end of this book. Singing sea chanteys is always a good way to celebrate Pirate Day.
Pirate Pete’s Talk Like A Pirate by Kim Kennedy illustrated by Doug Kennedy
This book is perfect for teaching pirate lingo. Talking like a pirate is essential to Pete as he searches for a new crew. I know my kids love talking like a pirate especially on pirate day. What better way to train your children and teach them pirate sayings than this fun book.
Pirate Nap: A Book of Colors by Danna Smith illustrated by Valeria Petrone
We found this clever book while at the library one day. It’s a great color book for younger kids. These two kids use their imagination as they pretend to be pirates. A great read before your little pirate has to take a nap.
How to be a Pirate by Sue Fliess illustrated by Nikki Dyson
This cute book again is filled with lots of pirate talk. And let’s be honest. Kids love talking like pirates. Reading about these goofy pirates is sure to make your day.
The Pirate Next Door by Jonny Duddle
While gathering images of my favorite pirate books Amazon suggested this book to me. We are defiantly going to be checking this book out at the library this week. It’s about a pirate family that moves into a quiet sea town. Everyone in town is talking about this family while they are in town fixing their ship. It appears to have a fun twist at the end reminding us to look for the best in others. Jonny Duddle also wrote Pirate Crunchers, another book I would like to check out. The illustrations are so clever.
I hope these books get your family in the mood for Talk Like A Pirate Day. If I missed your favorite pirate book leave it in the comments below!!!
