Is there any more valuable skill than teaching our teens how to cook bacon? Okay maybe some spiritual stuff. But really, this is an important skill. And a good reminder that some of the best meals are simple. Feeding ourselves doesn’t have to be complicated.
This fun and easy meal is one my family loves. And it’s perfect for our Teaching Teens To Cook series.
Skills taught during this meal:
- The best and easiest way to cook bacon.
My ‘singles living’ class teacher Mrs. Whitman taught me how to cook bacon in the oven and it’s a game changer. No oil splatters or time wasted standing by the frying pan. Just one of the reasons I love her.
Cooking Bacon in the Oven
You know that weird pan that comes with your oven. Apparently it’s there to make your life easier by making the most amazing food ever, bacon. I line the bottom with foil and spray the top with cooking spray.
Lay your bacon on the top of the pan, lining each slice up right next to each other. Preheat your oven to 400*. Then cook your bacon for 20 minutes, or more if you like it extra crispy.
That’s it.
And with that 20 minutes of your life you can read, stretch, do push ups, or talk with your kids. Or maybe cut up the tomato, lettuce, and avocado.
I like to grill my bread. You can find out how I make my BLT’s with this post. Or you can just toast your bread. Or just remove it out of the bag. I like sourdough but most of my kids like fluffy white bread. Really you can use tortillas, bagels, or whatever bread you have.
This recipe is so easy you might wonder why I didn’t choose it first? Good things come to those who wait. And when I make this meal I usually sample at least half of a slice just to make sure it tastes good. (It always does) And so my teen can enjoy the glorious pay off of an extra bacon slice for working so hard on this life skill.
Learning how to easily cook bacon is a great life skill. And also a good reminder that our dinners don’t have to be extra fancy. We just need good, fresh ingredients.
