Thanks for joining us for another Teaching Teens To Cook post. I’m excited to share this recipe because it’s a family favorite! It’s so easy and so good. The best part is that it uses a crock pot. And I love that they have smaller crock pots that are perfect for college or moving out. Our family has one is great for feeding large crowds, but really kids moving out don’t need a huge appliance.
This recipe will teach them how to:
- Cook ground beef
- Use a crock pot
You can find my recipe here. It’s so easy! To start you want to cook 1 lb of ground beef. Spray your frying pan with cooking spray. Using a wooden spoon break up your thawed ground beef so it can cook evenly. Or use a cool tool like this.
When cooking ground beef we basically want it to be brown and not pink. Stirring often while cooking over medium heat. You will want to drain your ground beef. This handy tool helps you drain and mix your ground beef.
Teach your kids to NOT place your drippings down the drain. You can use an old can or put some foil in a cup and create a foil bowl than can be discarded when it cools. Also it would be helpful to explain why we don’t put fat or oil down the drains.
Add your ground beef and taco seasonings to your crock pot. Open your cans of tomatoes, corn, and black beans. Literally dump them in your crock pot and stir everything together. Cook on low for 6 hours.

Be prepared for your house to smell amazing. Top your soup with cheese, sour cream, avocado, cilantro and tortilla chips. You can make some amazing guacamole to go with it. And I like to squeeze some limes into my bowl.
And luckily your teen already has some practice with grating cheese and cutting up veggies from the first meal in our series.
It’s so good. And so easy.
To cut Cilantro:
After washing simply chop up your cilantro. I remove the large stems, but I don’t mind having smaller stems in there. I’ve been told the proper way is to remove the top leaf and then sliding your finger back towards the base, which will remove the other leaves. But that’s too much time for me. And I’m okay with some smaller stems.
To cut Limes:
Wash your limes. Cut your lime in half and then slice into moon sections. Place a fork inside while squeezing over your soup to prevent juice going everywhere.
Once your kids know how to make this recipe they will feel more confident when cooking with ground beef or using a crock pot. And my hope is that my son can make this for dinner sometime on his own.
It takes more time to show teens how to cook, but when they have mastered some recipes it will be easier for them to do it themselves. If you missed our first cooking lesson click over here!
