Back in May our family was blessed to be able to visit Utah with our dear friends. There are so many fun things to do in Utah. And we weren’t able to do them all. Which means we need to go back soon. My girlfriend told me there were tours available at the Mt. Timpanogos caves, also sometimes called the Dripping Caves. I knew my kids would love it! Especially Gandalf would loves all things nature and science. My girlfriend had gone as a girl, but she hadn’t taken her family there yet.
The hike was about 3 miles or so round trip. It’s a perfect family hike if you are in the area. My boys really loved it. And luckily for me my BFF’s brother came with us. He was so great about helping Yoda up the mountain. He would even carry him part of the way. I had little miss Georgiana in my baby bijorn, which she really didn’t like. She pretty much screamed the last quarter of the way up the mountain. When baby girl and I finally made it up the mountain (with her still screaming) a tour guide asked if we were doing the tour. I enthusiastically said yes. He did not look to excited about that. Luckily we had a different tour guide and she had fallen asleep before our tour started.
The view from up top is really beautiful. The pictures don’t do it justice. Utah is really a beautiful place. The hike was really a lot of fun, and little tiring carrying my baby girl who was trying to escape her carrier. (Yay for her gaining weight!) My dear friend Julie took her for me so I could give my diabetic son his insulin and lunch before we went inside for the cave tour. Her husband then took Georgiana and helped her fall asleep. And because he is such a gem he offered to hold her during the tour. The tour was really amazing, but you had to bend and duck for part of it. It looked pretty challenging holding her, trying to keep her asleep, and carrying his backpack while bending down through tunnels. He even knocked his head and cut part of his forehead. He was trying to make sure she didn’t get hurt. After the tour other people from our group told him he was a sweetheart. I told him he really was. And that she’s not even his baby.
Aren’t these caves amazing. Our tour guide was a really great guy who loved his job. I loved learning about the history of the caves. They have added some doors to preserve this treasure. They had been drying out. It’s best to bring a sweatshirt because it gets pretty chilly in there. And you can’t bring any food inside. Due to the moisture in side crumbs can become moldy and gross pretty quickly.
My boys loved exploring the caves. There is one time when the tour guide turns off the lights to show you how dark the caves must have been when they were first discovered, but it only lasts a minute. Draco was not happy about that. There was only wall that reminded them of Jabba the Hut.
Be sure to purchase your cave tour tickets down at the visitors center. You can’t buy them up at the cave entrance. And even if you don’t have a chance to see the caves you can still enjoy a great hike. It is really beautiful.
I can’t believe I didn’t get a picture of just Julie and me. I love that she wanted to do go for a hike on her birthday. It was a great day. Hiking as a family is a great way to spend a day. And it’s even better when you have family and friends. Especially when those friends help you with your kids. I can’t wait to head back to visit Julie. We need to hike the “Y” next time. And I know my boys will want to visit the Mt. Timpanogos caves again. I am so grateful for this beautiful earth we live on. And I am so thankful for great friends. Julie has been one of my best friends for a long time. We have been friends since before I had Gandalf. She is my oldest adult friend, or really my longest friend I have had as an adult. She is such a great example of a wonderful wife and mother. She is loyal, funny, and always quick to help others. She is constant and always there. She is a great listener. And a great talker (like me!) and it’s easy to talk for hours and hours. Julie is always there when you need her. And you don’t have to ask. And she is my go to for parenting advice. It’s great having a friend that is a little older and her kids have gone through things already. And I love her kids dearly too. It was such a great day! I loved it! Defiantly a memorable birthday. And later that night we went our with the girls for some great Mexican food. (Told you her hubby was a gem!) I sure to miss spending time with them!
