You may have friends or family talk about “General Conference” and wonder what it is all about. I would hate to exclude anyone or make anyone feel left out. I thought it would be nice to share what Conference means to me. Twice a year my faith holds a conference. There is actually a Conference Center in Salt Lake City where it is held. (Tours are available) The first weekend of April and the first weekend in October we gather as saints to hear the word of God. Saturday and Sunday each have two sessions where speakers are asked to give a talk. This conference is broadcasted all over the world and in more languages than I can imagine. It is a world wide event. It is an important time in our faith as we look to have prayers answered and a chance to receive revelation on how we can more fully come unto Christ.
I believe there is a prophet today. A prophet like in Bible times. I believe that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the same church organized by our Savior when He was on the earth. And that His church was restored by a boy named Joseph Smith who was called to be the first prophet in these latter days. And I have the treasured opportunity to hear a prophet and apostles speak during General Conference. In addition to the four sessions mentioned earlier there is also a Priesthood session for the men held on Saturday night. I like to make Saturday night a girls night where we watch musicals, paint our nails, and spend time together. A Women’s Conference is held the week before. (Check out my thoughts on it here)
I love watching Conference as a family. We have family traditions such as getting donuts Saturday morning and making cinnamon rolls Sunday morning. Our kids color and do word searches while they listen to our church leaders. Conference talks always uplift and build my faith. I love that we can feel the spirit as a family.
This conference is going to be especially exciting. In addition to a living prophet we also have 12 Apostles who hold the responsibility to be a Special Witness of Jesus Christ. In the last 6 months, since our last conference, 3 dear apostles have passed away. We will miss those men dearly. And it means that 3 new apostles are called by revelation to be an Apostle of The Lord Jesus Christ. I loved reading this article to gain some insights on how new Apostles are called.
I hope that this information helps you learn what Conference is all about. Anyone is welcomed to watch and be edified. These messages can be applied to so many faiths. I know you will feel the spirit if you listen.Or you can enjoy and pin the uplifting messages that will follow after these conferences are held. Thank you for letting me share something dear to my heart! And I would love to hear if your faith has any traditions of gathering as one and hearing the word of God. I love when we can find common ground.
